Don’t Waste Your Mind
There was once a television commercial that said something like this:
“A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”
I believe that is right. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. It’s also a terrible thing to pollute. Lots of people are concerned about air pollution and water pollution. Those things are bad, but not as bad as “mind” pollution.
So, how do you pollute your mind?
You pollute your mind by allowing it to be filled with all the garbage the world has to offer. In the media and on the street you see every kind of wickedness. If you allow your mind to be saturated with this garbage, you will suffer.
That is why I Peter 1:13 says,
“Therefore, stir up your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
God never intended you to be passive when it comes to your mind. He wants you to fill your mind with His Word, and not the vain philosophies of a lost and sinful world.
If you let your mind coast in neutral, the enemy will make sure it is saturated with evil. I’m not saying that you are going out and looking for wickedness. It comes looking for you.
You can’t totally avoid the world, the flesh, and the devil. You are bombarded by the lies and ungodliness every day. So what hope do you have to survive it all?
Your only hope is to fill up your mind with Scripture. Listen to what the Bible says about the power of God’s Word:
“For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (NASV)
The Word of God, hidden in your mind, will help to counteract what the enemy throws at you. Memorize the Bible, meditate on it, pray through it. It will deepen your communion with Jesus Christ.
You might also want to limit television watching and newspaper reading. There is some good in these media outlets, but there is also a lot of bad.
